Validity and requirements for the application

The Certificate of Citizenship has a legal validity of 6 months and can be requested from any Italian Municipality, regardless of the place of residence.
To submit the application, the following information is required:

  • first and last name of the person concerned
  • date and place of birth
  • Municipality of residence

Attention to dates not available in the archives

It may happen that the individual’s information is not available in the Civil Registry archives, for example if the person lived more than 100 years ago. In this case, the certificate cannot be issued.

The certificates can be requested by anyone with a legitimate interest.
Some Civil Registry Offices may require a power of attorney accompanied by a copy of the identity document of the person concerned.
